August 16, 1978. This date marks exactly one year after the King’s passing. For four decades, Memphis has hosted a weeklong celebration commemorating its’ beloved rock star. Every year thousands of fans from across the globe come to praise the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Death Week is a Memphis tradition and remains one of the biggest events in the Mid-South.
A candlelight vigil, an auction of memorabilia and music accompany the yearly ritual. As part of the celebrations, special guests and those who knew him best come to tell stories about the King. Fans also enjoy musical performances and movie showings focused on his legacy throughout the week.
While new musicians and entertainers make up the modern music landscape, one thing’s for certain, Memphis will never forget the King.
